A PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

Gracious and loving God, we thank you for the gift of our priests.

Through them, we experience your presence in the sacraments.

Help our priests to be strong in their vocation.

Set their souls on fire with love for your people.

Grant them the wisdom, understanding, and strength they need to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

Inspire them with the vision of your Kingdom.

Give them the words they need to spread the Gospel.

Allow them to experience joy in their ministry.

Help them to become instruments of your divine grace.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns as our Eternal Priest. Amen.

FELLOWSHIP

Women Alone Together

In Prayer We Will Always Be Together

“Let’s Talk About Ephesus in Turkey”, said Phyllis Daniel at our monthly gathering on May 25th.  She brought along picture postcards, photographs and a small map of the Apostle Paul’s missionary journeys in Asia Minor on the Mediterranean, which included a 2-year stay in Ephesus around 53 A.D.  It was here in the great amphitheater (only 25% of the stone structure has been excavated till now) that Paul first preached Christianity to the Gentiles.  His teachings are laid down in the Letter to the Ephesians.  A visit to the ancient city of Ephesus is a must-do; there are many historical gems to explore in Turkey!  Ephesus was a major Greek port city, home to the famous Temple of Diana, a much-revered pagan goddess (in the Acts of the Apostles indicated as Artemis.)  Visitors to Ephesus will stop by at a modest stone house, now a chapel of worship, where the Virgin Mary lived until the end of her life.  At her death, she was assumed into heaven body and soul.  The feast day of her Assumption is celebrated on August 15.

Thank you, Phyllis, for sharing your beautiful travel memories with us!

FAMILIES IN FAITH

Thank you for the great response to help with this year’s Back-to-School Clothing and Backpack Drive.  We handed out all 110 bags last weekend, but we will still be collecting new backpacks and school supplies until Friday, August 10.  You can bring donations to the church office or the collection boxes in the narthex.  Our goal is to collect 100 backpacks and stock the shelves of the Waccamaw area schools and Teach My People with school supplies for the year!

Next Sunday, August 2, 2009 the Catholic Church is celebrating the bicentennial of St. Elizabeth Anne Seton's founding of the Sisters of Charity. Since she is our patron saint, all members should attend the 10:30 AM Mass in her honor. Directly after Mass, Father Pat will lead us all to the statue of Mother Seton, where we will lay flowers at the foot of the statue and recite our Mother Seton prayer. At noon, all churches will ring their bells in commemoration of the feast day.  Please plan to attend Mass where we will all sit as a group, wearing our name tags, and then will attend a very short ceremony at the statue of Mother Seton.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

KOFCSEAL

Over the next four weeks we will be focusing on this year’s Knights of Columbus Catholic Youth Action Award winners. The first winner is Benjamin Spagnuolo…

Ben has been altar serving for many years and has gained the confidence of Fr. Pat in that he asks him to serve the “high” Masses for visiting priests and the Bishop, along with weddings, funerals and special liturgies.  He is most well read in his faith and is in the process of discerning a possible vocation to the priesthood.  In addition to helping out with various Parish Functions, he has participated in Diocesan Youth Conference (DYC), Christian Leadership Institute (CLI), and XLT – teen adoration co-sponsored by PBOC and St. Michael’s, and has represented PBOC at Diocesan Listening sessions in their 5-year plan creation.  He represented PBOC at World Youth Day in Australia, and most recently was selected to represent the youth of the parish on the Parish Council.

To quote his letter of nomination…”Most notably, Ben has sponsored a 16-year-old boy during his RCIA preparations and initiation into the Catholic Church.  This same commitment he made to the spiritual care of this candidate swells over to his friendships.  Ben acts as the “moral sounding board” to his friends, leading by example and speech, living boldly according to Catholic doctrine and not the ways of the world.”

Reminder:  The Knights of Columbus Officers Meeting is this Tuesday, July 28, at 7:00 PM in Founders Hall.

St. Ignatius Loyola (Feast Day July 31)
“Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory,
my understanding and my entire will, all I have and call my own.

You have given all to me.
To you, Lord, I return it.

Everything is yours; do with it what you will.
Give me only your love and your grace,
That is enough for me.”
