The Outreach Ministry at Precious Blood of Christ parish includes
fourteen committees whose social mission is characterized by a love for the poor
and vulnerable, ensuring that people have the basic human necessities for life.
We are called to continue Christ’s mission of compassionate love, service and
justice in our community.
The committees under the Outreach umbrella range from adult literacy to social
services, and are in place to address the corporal works of mercy where
possible. To “feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty,” we have
established Father Pat’s Lunch Kitchen, which provides a hot meal every
Wednesday and a soup/sandwich lunch every Thursday at Founder’s Hall. The
Holiday Food Distribution program oversees the acquisition and distribution
of food to needy families in Pawleys Island at Easter, Thanksgiving and
Christmas. Meals on Wheels provides meals to the elderly and disabled
people in the community. Adult Literacy assists those who wish to improve
their reading and writing skills. Another education-related committee involves
volunteering
at Teach My People, an after-school and summer enrichment program which
serves “at-risk” students and their families. To “shelter the homeless,” we have
a liaison with Habitat For Humanity, and we have a parish group of
Angels With Hammers who provide volunteers and materials for home repairs
for those in need. The Prison Ministry provides volunteers to the
Georgetown County Detention Center to assist the Sheriff’s office with inmate
re-entry training. The Respect Life committee promotes the dignity of
human life through prayer, communi-cation, and education. They provide material
support for women facing unplanned pregnancies through organizations such as
Birthright of Georgetown and Catholic Charities. The Ecumenical committee
plans community-wide programs and services with the other churches in Pawleys
Island. The Legislative Issues committee reviews all federal, state
and/or local legislation for possible action and informs the community about the
impact of such legislation. The Human Resources committee helps with
organizational and personnel development for all committees and provides
assistance for employment concerns in the community. The Transportation
committee provides rides for parishioners without other means of attending
services or meeting doctor appointments. The Social Services committee
evaluates all inquiries for assistance from the community and authorizes parish
resources to pay for emergency needs as required.
There are over one hundred parishioners who actively participate across the
Outreach committees. We are always in need of volunteers and invite you to
consider where you could be of assistance, especially in the Prison Ministry and
the Angels With Hammers.
